2019 Summer Reading Program

The 2019 Friends of Andersonville Summer Reading Program will kick off in July 2019! As a non-profit, our resources are limited and we enter children into the program based upon the results of our fundraising efforts.  Friends of Andersonville registration will begin in May 2019 and this year, we are trying something new… your child/children will automatically be entered into the program if you volunteer during Midsommarfest 2019 with Friends of Andersonville!

The reading program will begin on Wednesday, July 10th and run through August 28th. Our tent will be outside of Women & Children First Bookstore (5233 N. Clark Street) between 4pm and 7pm each Wednesday.

Without the continued support from volunteers, the Friends of Andersonville program would not exist. Please consider volunteering as a beer server for FoA at this summer’s Midsommarfest!

Connecting kids & our community, one book at a time!

Friends of Andersonville is a volunteer driven non-profit focused on improving the lives of children in the community. Our mission is to promote literacy, while strengthening the bonds between our neighborhood children, Public Schools, and local businesses. Our overall goal is to support children in our local public schools and their reading progress over the summer break.

This program multiplies the effect of each dollar in the community from improving the lives and experiences of children to supporting local businesses to building a community around childhood literacy.

How do we do it? In 2019, Friends of Andersonville infused nearly $10,000 into our local economy by purchasing gift cards from local businesses. The gift cards are the 'Reading Rewards' the kids earn each week just for reading and journaling!

During each week of the summer program the children bring their reading journals to our Wednesday afternoon check-in at the tent we set up next to Women & Children First. Children in the program share what they've been reading and we celebrate by giving them $10 in gift cards each week.

The 'Reading Rewards' are in two parts: a $5 gift certificate for more books to continue reading for the next week and a $5 gift certificate from a local business. Each week we rotate through prizes from different neighborhood businesses, including toy stores, ice cream parlors, comic book shops and more.

Our board is currently made of four members:  Randy Heite and Ann Regan. You can contact us at info@friendsofandersonville.net

Sponsor a Child or Volunteer with us!

Please help Sponsor a child's summer reading for $50 today! Of course we will take more or less. The organization is 100% volunteer based – no one takes any money home – and every dollar donated goes to support children’s literacy. CLICK on the PayPal DONATE button above or visit our Make a Donation Page.

We are looking for volunteers to serve beer at Andersonville's Midsommarfest, June 8th & 9th, to help raise money for the Summer Reading Program. If you'd like to volunteer for a 4-hour shift at our Center Tent, let us know. It is a fun way to support a great program!
