2018 Summer Reading Program

The 2018 Friends of Andersonville Summer Reading Program is at full capacity with 141 kids signing up to read throughout the summer with us!

The reading program started on Wednesday, July 11th and runs through August 29th. Our tent will be outside of Women & Children First Bookstore (5233 N. Clark Street) between 4pm and 7pm each Wednesday.

As a non-profit, our resources are limited and we registered the first 130 kids into the program. Fortunately, we were able to add those on the wait-list this year bringing our total to 1441 kids!

Without the continued support from volunteers, the Friends of Andersonville program would not exist. Our next fundraiser is our Friday Happy Hour with beer, food, and the Outlaw Country Band, Hodie Snitch on August 3rd, 5pm-10pm... Please save the date!

Connecting kids & our community, one book at a time!

Friends of Andersonville is a volunteer driven non-profit focused on improving the lives of children in the community. Our mission is to promote literacy, while strengthening the bonds between our neighborhood children, Public Schools, and local businesses.

This program multiplies the effect of each dollar in the community from improving the lives and experiences of children to supporting local businesses to building a community around childhood literacy.

During each week of the summer program the children keep notes and draw pictures about what they are reading in their journals that we provide them. Each week on Wednesday afternoon, we set up a tent in front of Women & Children First. Children in the program check in with us there to show us their journals and talk about what they’ve read in the preceding week. If they’ve done the reading, they win a reward.

The rewards are in two parts: a certificate for more books to continue reading for the next week and a prize from a local business. Each week we rotate through prizes from different neighborhood businesses, including toy stores, ice cream parlors, comic book shops and more.

Our board is currently made of four members:  Randy Heite, Ann Regan, Ali Burke, and Mark Emmler. You can contact us at info@friendsofandersonville.net

Sponsor a Child or Volunteer with us!

Please help Sponsor a child's summer reading for $50 today! Of course we will take more or less. The organization is 100% volunteer based – no one takes any money home – and every dollar donated goes to support children’s literacy.

THANK YOU, to all of the volunteers who are serving beer at Andersonville's Midsommarfest, June 9th & 10th, to help raise money for the Summer Reading Program. If you'd like to volunteer for a 4-hour shift in the future let us know. It is a fun way to support a great program!
